Park Road Books Book Clubs:

Benediction by Kent Haruf

The Park Road Books Book Club meets in the store the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm. Join us on December 2nd.

The Park Road Books Book Club will be reading Want Not by Jonathan Miles. As the novel opens on Thanksgiving Day, readers are telescoped into three different worlds in various states of disrepair—a young freegan couple living off the grid in New York City; a once-prominent linguist, sacked at midlife by the dissolution of his marriage and his father’s losing battle with Alzheimer’s; and a self-made debt-collecting magnate, whose brute talent for squeezing money out of unlikely places has yielded him a royal existence, trophy wife included. Want and desire propel these characters forward toward something, anything, more, until their worlds collide, briefly, randomly, yet irrevocably, in a shattering ending that will haunt readers long after the last page is turned. With a satirist’s eye and a romantic’s heart, Miles captures the morass and comedy of contemporary life in all its excess. Bold, unblinking, unforgettable in its irony and pathos, Want Not is a wicked, bighearted literary novel that confirms the arrival of a major voice in American fiction.

Book club participants will receive 20% off the $14.95 price.

The Martian by Andy Weir

The Park Road Books Geek Book Club meets in the store the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. This month, join us on the third Tuesday, December 16th.

The Park Road Books Geek Book Club will be reading The Martian by Andy Weir. Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first men to walk on the surface of Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first man to die there. It started with the dust storm that holed his suit and nearly killed him, and that forced his crew to leave him behind, sure he was already dead. Now he's stranded millions of miles from the nearest human being, with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his food would be gone years before a rescue mission could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to get him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. But will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Book club participants will receive 20% off the $15.00 price.

Fresh Off the Boat

The Park Road Books Foodie Book Club meets in the store the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Join us on November 18th at Sir Edmond Halley's.

*Please make note that on Tuesday, November 18th, the Foodie Book Club will meet at Sir Edmond Halley's at 7:00 PM rather than at the bookstore!

The Park Road Books Foodie Book Club will be reading Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir by Eddie Huang. Assimilating ain’t easy. Eddie Huang was raised by a wild family of FOB (“fresh off the boat”) immigrants—his father a cocksure restaurateur with a dark past back in Taiwan, his mother a fierce protector and constant threat. Young Eddie tried his hand at everything mainstream America threw his way, from white Jesus to macaroni and cheese, but finally found his home as leader of a rainbow coalition of lost boys up to no good: skate punks, dealers, hip-hop junkies, and sneaker freaks. This is the story of a Chinese-American kid in a could-be-anywhere cul-de-sac blazing his way through America’s deviant subcultures, trying to find himself, ten thousand miles from his legacy and anchored only by his conflicted love for his family and his passion for food.

Book club participants will receive 20% off the $15.00 price.
